One such device which has recently become available is an animal trainer alarm which sounds an audible alarm, such as a whistle, when an animal, such as a dog, leaves a specified area or enclosure. The alarm is typically situated on a housing which is attached to the animal's collar and which extends at least partially around the neck of the animal. In the preferred embodiment, the alarm is attached to a collar through an elongated rigid tube which is secured to the collar and to the housing and which extends partially around the neck of the animal. Various types of housings are known. In a preferred embodiment, the housing consists of a tubular member having an internal diameter which closely fits the outer diameter of the animal's neck. The inner end of the tubular member is shaped so as to be smoothly deformable inwardly toward the animal's neck, while the outer end is shaped to be rigid and to be securely attached to the animal's collar. A latch member is attached to the housing and is located near the inner end so as to be movable from a first, inoperative position, to a second, activated position upon the housing being positioned within an animal's neck. In the inactive or inoperative position, the latch member is located so that it is not in engagement with a latch seat formed in the housing. The latch seat includes an abutment which is so located as to abut the outer end of the latch member when the housing is positioned in the animal's neck. Therefore, the latch member will remain in the inoperative position unless sufficient force is exerted thereon to force the latch member outwardly and into the activated position. In the activated position, the latch member engages the latch seat and is moved in unison therewith, such that the latch seat is moved toward the outer end of the housing. As the latch seat approaches the outer end of the housing, the latch member becomes fully engaged therewith, thereby preventing the latch member from being moved in an opposite direction. As noted, the latch member has a generally elongated configuration, and may be any appropriate shape or configuration, so long as it is rigid. For example, the latch member may be a rigid metal bar which has a generally elongated configuration. The latch member is preferably attached to the housing in such a manner so that it will be displaced when the
