Director's Cut. 1984. Theatrical Format. Rated. A.... Music. Gross. Run Time.The present invention relates to a high capacity, high flow rate blood pump and a pump/pump exchanger system. In particular, the invention relates to a positive displacement pump that is compact, lightweight, and provides increased blood flow over known blood pumps. Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) has been used for many years in cardiac and other types of surgeries. When used during CPB, a pump is used to circulate the blood in the patient's circulatory system. CPB is employed during open-heart surgery, for example, to maintain organ perfusion and to wash and deoxygenate the blood before it is returned to the patient. In this procedure, blood is removed from the patient's body through an artery, passed through the heart and then passed into a venous line, and finally returned to the patient. It is critical that blood flowing through the arterial line during CPB be free from air and clots so as to prevent air embolisms from entering the patient's circulatory system. One type of pump used for CPB is a roller pump, which consists of a pump body and a pair of counter-rotating rollers. The rollers engage the inner walls of a pump housing, and the rollers squeeze blood out of the housing and into the patient's circulatory system. Examples of roller pumps can be found in U.S. Pat.
